A great afternoon of creative thinking. Bill Grant offered up his formula for developing a “strategic roadmap.” It’s an interesting challenge to concept a new way, with a team of strangers. A great learning tool, and a stimulating process.

Again, a great keynote… like David, Bill seems to simply have the Midas touch when dealing with the clients he presented to us. His workshop was good, but maybe too similar to David’s in that we were fiddling with an ordinary object, trying to make it something else. Bill Moser brought up this point at the end of our workshop and I look forward to the next one being tailored specifically to our regional “pain point”. From Bill Grant I would have liked to see the workshop focus on some or all of his “10 Small Ideas w/ Big Results”. Please don’t take this the wrong way… I think I would have had the same mild criticism of David if his workshop had followed Bill’s. Our discussion in the Grant follow up was excellent. A lot of free flowing ideas bouncing off of each other culminating in the possibility of a local design fair of some sort. The Leadershop is progressing very nicely!

Bill Grant obviously knows design, and he knows about expanding his company beyond the traditional graphic design territory mined by so many. He is in the enviable position of being hired for his thinking, and getting paid for his solutions to business problems. Plus, he’s a nice guy and I enjoyed his workshop.
What I am wondering is, and forgive me for missing the follow-up meeting, how do we learn to translate this “design thinking” into marketable skills in our respective businesses?
At Trone, we do a lot of brainstorming already. We know about collaboration, and Bill’s workshop exercise felt a lot like a tough day at the office to me, coming up with creative solutions to a business problem, even if it was for a fictional product idea. I would have hoped Mr. Grant could have shared strategies for companies to expand their influence with their existing clients, or even new ones.
My hope for the rest of the Leadershop is to help us not learn to be creative thinkers, but to explore how creative thinking can be used to grow area business.

Martin,
Great feedback and certainly points we can incorporate into the next workshop series. For our follow-up, we did touch upon many of the areas you mention and plan to continue doing so.
