David Rose

David Rose is a product designer, technology visionary, and serial entrepreneur. David is currently Chief Executive at Vitality, a company that is reinventing medication packaging with wireless technology.

Rose founded and was CEO of Ambient Devices where he pioneered glanceable technology: embedding Internet information in everyday objects like light bulbs, mirrors, refrigerator doors, digital post-it notes, and umbrellas to make the physical environment an interface to digital information.

Rose founded Viant’s Innovation Center, an advanced technology group for Fortune 500s including Sony, GM, Schwab, Sprint and Kinkos. He helped build Viant to over 900 people, $140M and a successful IPO.

In 1997 Rose patented online photo-sharing and founded Opholio (acquired by FlashPoint Technology).

Before the Internet he founded and was President of Interactive Factory (acquired by RDW Group) which creates interactive museum exhibits, educational software and smart toys, including the award-winning LEGO Mindstorms Robotic Invention System.

Rose taught information visualization at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and currently teaches a popular course in tangible user interfaces at the MIT Media Lab. He is a frequent speaker to corporations and design and technology conferences.

He received his BA in Physics from St. Olaf College, studied Interactive Cinema at the MIT Media Lab, and earned a Masters Degree from Harvard University.

Enchanted Objects: The Next Wave of the Internet

David Rose is a serial entrepreneur and now a faculty member at the MIT Media Lab. He works with sensing technologies and Internet communications capabilities built into everyday objects.

One local example is Truliant Credit Union's headquarters in Winston-Salem. Its campus has one of David's devices at the top of an outdoor obelisk that glows different colors to indicate levels of customer satisfaction.

David's most recent project addresses the serious problem of patients' adherence to doctors' advice. One of David's devices is being built into the caps of vials containing prescription medicines. The cap will glow when it's time for a patient to take their pill.

From Downtown Greensboro
Follow Market Street east to the NC A&T campus. The first intersection at the campus is Market and Dudley Streets (traffic light); turn left on Dudley Street. Go to the first stoplight (Bluford Street) and turn right. Continue to Nocho Street and turn right. Harrison Auditorium will be on left. The parking lot is next to Harrison.

From Winston-Salem (Airport)
Travel on I-40 East to Greensboro. Once within the city limits, continue on I-40 east to Exit #127 (Highway 29 North, Reidsville Exit). Take Exit 127 onto HWY 29 North. Remain on HWY 29 North for approx. four miles. Take the West Market Street/NC A&T University Exit. Once you exit, yield to the right on Market Street at the intersection. Go to the third stoplight (at Dudley Street) and turn right. Go to the first stoplight (Bluford Street) and turn right. Continue to Nocho Street and turn right. Harrison Auditorium will be on the left. The parking lot is next to Harrison.

From Charlotte
On I-85 North into Greensboro (be careful, the new bypass will take you to Durham) take the US 29 N exit. Remain on HWY 29 North for approx. four miles. Take the West Market Street/NC A&T University Exit. Once you exit, yield to the right on Market Street at the intersection. Go to the third stoplight (Dudley Street) and turn right. Go to the first stoplight (Bluford Street) turn right. Continue to Nocho Street and turn right. Harrison auditorium will be on the left. The parking lot is next to Harrison.

From Reidsville
Follow Highway 29 South into the city of Greensboro. Once in Greensboro, continue to follow 29 South for approximately six miles to the Sullivan St. Exit, which is Lutheran St. At the second stoplight (Sullivan Street) turn left. Go to the first stoplight (Dudley Street) turn left. Continue to the first stoplight (Bluford Street) turn left. Follow Bluford Street to Nocho Street and turn right. Harrison Auditorium will be on the left. The parking lot is next to Harrison.

From Durham
Follow I-85 South to NC6 (Lee Street, Exit 41). Turn right on Lee Street toward Greensboro. Continue to Benbow Road; turn right on Benbow. Follow Benbow to Market Street (approximately two blocks), and turn left on Market (at the light). Go to the third stoplight (at Dudley Street) and turn right. Go to the first stoplight (Bluford Street) and turn right. Continue to Nocho Street and turn right. Harrison Auditorium is on the left. The parking lot is next to Harrison.

Keynote Parking
Participants may park in the parking lot next to Harrison Auditorium and in Williams Cafeteria.

Workshop Parking
Participants may park in the Obermeyer Parking Deck (corner of Obermeyer & Bluford Street). A shuttle bus will run every 15 minutes.
